Description:
Annie Besant (1847-1933) British Socialist, writer and Women's Rights Activist, handwritten and signed letter on headed paper for the Theosophical Society, Madras, dated March 1917, to Miss Eleanor Elder in thanks for a photograph, along with a fragment of a leaflet or programme dated February 1918 with signed autograph for Annie Besant. (2).

PROVENANCE:
Letter sourced from the property adjoining Lobswood House, originally called ‘Black Lake Cottage’, the summer retreat of author Sir JM Barrie from 1901 to 1908, the years in which he created Peter Pan and where Barrie entertained his cricketing friends (many of whom are well known authors and playwrights) and the Llewelyn Davies family.

FOOTNOTE:
Besant was an ardent supporter of Irish and Indian self-rule. Rabindranath Tagore came to Madras at the request of Annie Besant to work in the Theosophical Publishing House.
