19TH CENTURY AUSTRIAN HERMANN RATZERSDORFER, VIENNA (ACTIVE 1843-81) SILVER AND COPPER ENAMELLED BOWL OF COMPRESSED CIRCULAR FORM, WITH A DOMED COVER, DECORATED WITH A SCENE INSPIRED BY OVID'S METAMORPHOSIS, DEPICTING THE CENTAUR NESSUS HELPING DEIANEIRA CROSS THE EUNOS RIVER, THE BODY DECORATED WITH BACCHANALIAN SCENES IN AN ITALIANATE LANDSCAPE AND THE DOMED BASE PAINTED WITH A FEMALE MASK, URN, FLOWERS AND FOLIAGE (H. 4 CM, DIA. 7.5 CM). THE COVER INTERIOR BEARS LABEL INSCRIBED 'COLL. LATE MRS GILLILAN 6 PALACE GATE. W.' HERMANN RATZERSDORFER EXHIBITED AT THE GREAT EXHIBITION LONDON 1851 AND AGAIN IN 1871.
