Description:
H.R.H. Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood (1897-1965, only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary) - Various letters from the 1930s addressed to her son Gerald Lascelles: dated February 1935 including 'I expect you will have seen photographs of Grannie [Queen Mary] at the British Industries Fair and some with me. I went with Grannie each day...Last Friday, Grand Papa [King George V] held a Levee at St James's Palace and drove in state with an escort of Life Guards. I watched the procession from my room, it looked very pretty'; one dated November 30th 1936 including 'I have been busy with my Xmas shopping since I last wrote and so has Grannie [Queen Mary]. We have been to some shops together...I have seen a good many people including Uncle David [King Edward VIII one month prior to his abdication], Uncle Bertie [later King George VI] and Aunt Elizabeth, Uncle Harry...' then later 'I have just been listening to the description on the Wireless of the fire at Crystal Palace. Grannie and I saw a pink glow across St James's Park before dinner but of course had no idea what it was and did not think it could be a fire. Soon after 10, we were told of this fire and went on to the next floor above and looked out of the window but it had already begun to die down. It appears to be a very serious fire indeed'; and various others including mention of 'Uncle George and Aunt Marina' [Duke and Duchess of Kent], 'Uncle Bertie and Aunt Elizabeth' [King George VI and the Queen mother].
