World War II interest -H.R.H. Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood (1897-1965, only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary): Letter to her son Gerald Lascelles dated December 11th 1940 including '...we had a noisy time Friday night when the warning came at 9.10 and from 10.30 onwards we heard gunfire and explosions and machines. They dropped incendiary and I believe about 50 bombs on Leeds but I cannot make out that the damage or casualties are serious...'. Also an envelope stamped 'GROW MORE FOOD / DIG FOR VICTORY' and dated March 1941 addressed to Gerald Lascelles, containing letter from Princess Mary regarding WWII related visits, inspections of Ordnance Depots and the ATS, 'lunching in the Mess' as well as a luncheon with the Duchess of Devonshire and Duchess of Northumberland. Also letters sent to Gerald Lascelles at Eton College dated October 23rd 1940 includes '...I heard 27 evacuees are coming to the village on Friday from London!', dated November 6th 1940 includes '...and visited evacuee families from London' as well as describing inspections of Royal Signals and ATS, and one dated 1941 '...Next Sunday Feb 2nd, I am to broadcast at the end of 6 O'clock news, about blood-transfuion. They want 100,000 blood donors in the East and West Ridings'.

During the Second World War, Princess Mary was controller and then controller commandant of the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS). The ATS was the women’s branch of the British Army from 1938 to 1949. By the end of the war, approximately 200,000 members of the ATS from across the British Empire had served in the United Kingdom and overseas.

I will take care of these for you. Will you please write to Grannie to thank her very much...' . Along with another letter dated March 1936, on Buckingham Palace headed paper, includes '...Grannie and I lunched with Uncle Harry and Aunt Alice at the Royal Pavilion Aldershot. We walked in the grounds and Uncle Harry took me to see his horses...I walk with Grannie in the garden most days. Yesterday morning I went with her to Marlborough House where Grannie is going to live, the house is being done up...'. Also dated October 19th 1937, 'Uncle Bertie and Aunt Elizabeth arrive in York this afternoon and come here this evening' [King George VI and the Queen Mother].(3)

Uncle David [Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII] dined with Grannie [Queen Mary] last night before he went up to Scotland to see the ""Queen Mary""...; March 28th 1935 including 'This afternoon Daddy and I went to Victoria Station to meet Uncle Harry [Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester] on his return from his tour. He looks very well. Grandpapa, the Uncles, Daddy etc. were alll in uniform...'; March 6th 1935 'Last night I went to the Gardeners Company dinner - it was in the City at the Merchant Taylors' hall. There were 300 people present! I went with Uncle David [Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII] who was made a Freeman of the Gardener's Company. I am one already. I stay with Grannie and Grandpapa [King George and Queen Mary] from next Friday to Tuesday...'; June 1937 '...Daddy and I dined at the Egyptian Embassy to meet the King of Egypt and the Queen Mother, it was very hot. I went to Eton on Saturday afternoon to see Uncle Bertie and Aunt Elizabeth...[King George VI and the Queen mother]', and others.(Approx 20)

We passed Brooklands in the train and saw several aeroplanes and on the return journey actually saw racing cars on the track!' and in the same letter 'On Sunday we went to church with Grannie [Queen Mary], Lilibet [Queen Elizabeth II] and Margaret at the Queen's chapel...'. Also a letter dated 1939 including 'Daddy and I lunched with Mr and Mrs Chamberlain yesterday at 10 Downing Street, they have made the house so nice'.(2)

My numbers are up this year, I sent 3348 garments.'; dated October 1934 including 'What fun you must have had going down a fire shute. I remember doing it when I was about your age in Scotland for practice with Uncles David and Bertie [Duke of Windsor and King George VI], we thought it great fun.'; dated June 1937 '...to stay with Mr and Mrs Lionel Rothschild ...In the afternoon we went in Mr Rothschild's steam yacht ""Rhodora"" (1000 tons) and went in the Solent as far as the Needles'; and an envelope with 1936 1.5D red brown postage stamp of Edward VIII, containing letter dated April 8th 1938.(Approx 25)

Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood (1897-1965, only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary) - An important letter addressed to her son Gerald Lascelles dated February 9th 1936, a couple of weeks after the death of King George V, on Buckingham Palace headed paper includes the following: 'I motored with Uncle Charles and Grannie [Queen Mary] to the Royal Pavilion at Aldershot to pay Uncle Harry and Aunt Alice [Duke and Duchess of Gloucester] a visit...Daddy and I went to Windsor to see all the wreaths round St George's Chapel, a really lovely sight; I believe there were between 3 and 4000 wreaths in all - Uncles David [the Duke of Windsor who at that time was King Edward VIII], Bertie [George VI] and George [Duke of Kent] and Aunts Marina and Elizabeth have either lunched or dinner every other day' and later 'Uncle David is not going on a holiday to either Cornwall or Devon as far as I know.' Another letter dated February 15th 1937 reads '...did a great deal of sightseeing with Uncle David - you will be interested to hear that you are to be one of Grannie's pages at the Coronation, it is most kind of her to ask you. George is to be one of Uncle Bertie's.' [the coronation of George VI after the abdication of Edward VIII].(2)

I went with Grannie each day...Last Friday, Grand Papa [King George V] held a Levee at St James's Palace and drove in state with an escort of Life Guards. I watched the procession from my room, it looked very pretty'; one dated November 30th 1936 including 'I have been busy with my Xmas shopping since I last wrote and so has Grannie [Queen Mary]. We have been to some shops together...I have seen a good many people including Uncle David [King Edward VIII one month prior to his abdication], Uncle Bertie [later King George VI] and Aunt Elizabeth, Uncle Harry...' then later 'I have just been listening to the description on the Wireless of the fire at Crystal Palace. Grannie and I saw a pink glow across St James's Park before dinner but of course had no idea what it was and did not think it could be a fire. Soon after 10, we were told of this fire and went on to the next floor above and looked out of the window but it had already begun to die down. It appears to be a very serious fire indeed'; and various others including mention of 'Uncle George and Aunt Marina' [Duke and Duchess of Kent], 'Uncle Bertie and Aunt Elizabeth' [King George VI and the Queen mother].(Approx 24)

World War II interest -H.R.H. Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood (1897-1965, only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary) - A letter addressed to her son Gerald Lascelles dated October 4th 1938 includes: 'How thankful one is that agreement was reached at Munich and war prevented - We were issued with gas masks at Harewood on 29th in the house and they had a very full meeting in the school that night when Mr Fitzroy spoke on what to do and not to do in the event of a raid etc..etc..Mr F. had a quantity of sand against incendiary bobs. Otherwise little happened - I don't know what I shall I have done without the Wireless, it gave the news so well and at frequent intervals. I was thrilled at hearing Mr Chamberlain's arrival at Heston on Sept 30th and especially at 10 Downing St. Another dated June 12th 1941 '...we had an air raid, the siren being in the garden nearly blew one out of bed. Heard many machines and a few explosions...; dated June 20th 1940 'We had an Air Raid alarm at 12.30 last night. Uncle George was staying for one night. We all went to the cellar and stayed till about 2.15 and heard distant explosions'; dated June 4th 1941 '....went in an armoured car also a tank on Monday! I enjoyed it so much....Do take care of your clothes as it is going to be difficult with this rationing'; and two other letters relating to wartime efforts and rationing.

Uncle David lunched with us...' and later 'I fear Grannie must feel rather sad leaving Buckingham Palace after living there 26 years'; another dated November 28th 1939 ' I went with Grannie [Queen Mary] to London yesterday and we lunched with Uncle Bertie and Aunt Elizabeth [King George VI and the Queen Mother] and met Uncles Harry and George and Aunts Alice and Marina'; and various others.(Approx 29)
